Urban public spaces are key components of the structural fabric of cities, encompassing a diverse range of urban design dimensions. These spaces serve as settings for the presence and engagement of various social groups and play a vital role in social interaction, urban vitality, and the overall quality of urban life. Public spaces simultaneously meet the diverse needs of citizens while fostering social connections and enhancing the sense of belonging. A significant challenge in defining and classifying urban public spaces with distinctive characteristics is the vague and general references made to their various subtypes. One noteworthy type of urban public space is the kind that—due to its location within the urban structure and the influence of design elements—becomes a conducive setting for social interactions and events. This type of space can be referred to as a pause space, which in some authoritative sources is also known as a “static space” or “intermission space.” This article adopts a comparative approach to describe and analyze various perspectives and definitions of urban public spaces, aiming to clarify the concept of pause space and assess its alignment with the broader concept and function of urban public space in contrast to static or intermission spaces. Finally, the article proposes the defining characteristics and a suitable typology for urban pause spaces.
